Tesla has officially launched its highly anticipated Cybercab into public ride-hailing service in Austin, Texas, opening paid driverless rides to passengers. Engineered specifically for autonomous transport, the Cybercab is Tesla’s first dedicated vehicle designed completely without manual driving controls—eliminating the steering wheel, accelerator, brake pedals, and side mirrors entirely.
The futuristic two-seater features upward-opening butterfly doors and an open lounge cabin. Without a traditional dashboard or steering column, passengers enjoy expanded legroom, an automated profile system that adjusts climate settings upon entry, and a large central display powered by Starlink for 4K streaming and gaming. Despite its compact footprint, the rear hatchback accommodates full-sized luggage. Riders request vehicles using the Tesla Robotaxi app within a geofenced Austin service zone. However, the launch has drawn swift scrutiny from federal regulators. Tesla deployed the fleet by self-certifying that the vehicle complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). Because federal regulations historically require standard driver equipment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an audit query to review Tesla’s technical data and evaluate whether formal exemption permits are required for expanded commercial operations.
